Why Gen 2’s higher amperage rarely matters
On paper, Gen 2’s 80A ceiling looks like a huge win over Gen 3’s 48A — nearly double the power. In practice it almost never translates to a faster charge. No Tesla model on sale today has an onboard charger rated above 48A, so a Gen 2 unit wired for its full 80A on a 100A circuit charges a Tesla at exactly the same real-world speed as a Gen 3 on a 60A circuit — roughly 44 miles of range per hour. The extra amperage only pays off charging non-Tesla EVs with higher-capacity onboard chargers or in commercial settings running multiple vehicles off one high-capacity circuit, which is a small slice of home buyers.

When upgrading from Gen 2 actually makes sense
Charging speed almost never justifies the swap — your car’s onboard charger caps the benefit either way, per Tesla’s own published 48A limit across its current lineup. The real reasons to upgrade are the app (remote amperage control, scheduling, OTA updates instead of physically resetting DIP switches), easier wireless load sharing if you’re adding a second EV, or a Gen 2 unit that’s simply failing after years of service. If none of those apply and your Gen 2 charger works, there’s little practical upside to replacing hardware that’s already doing the job.

Buying new in 2026 means buying Gen 3 — it’s the only version Tesla still sells, and its 48A ceiling already matches what every current Tesla can accept, plus a longer cable and full app control that Gen 2 never had.
