The obvious move after buying a Mercedes EV is to ask the dealer for the Mercedes-Benz Wallbox. Mercedes-Benz USA rates it at up to 11.5 kW, adding up to 30 miles of range per hour, with a 23-foot J1772 cable. The catch is on the car side. Mercedes-Benz USA lists the EQS’s Level 2 maximum at 9.6 kW, and dealer FAQs give the same 9.6 kW ceiling for the EQB and EQE. Green Cars Compare lists the US G 580 at 9.6 kW as well. A 9.6 kW car draws 40 amps and stops there, so on four of the five Mercedes EV lines a dealer-priced 48A wall box charges exactly as fast as a $300 40A unit.
Mercedes EV home charging by the numbers
- 9.6 kW is the US Level 2 ceiling for the EQS, per Mercedes-Benz USA, and Mercedes-Benz Canada says that works out to just over 11 hours from 10% to 100%.
- 11.0 kW is the new CLA’s onboard AC charger rating, per Green Car Reports, which estimates an overnight charge of about eight hours for the US model’s 85 kWh usable battery.
- 1.9 kW is the most a 120V outlet delivers, per Mercedes-Benz USA, or roughly 2-4 miles of range per hour. That’s a backup, not a plan.
- 125% is the breaker rule. The National Electrical Code (Articles 625.41 and 210.20(A)) treats EV charging as a continuous load: a 40A charger needs a 50A breaker, and a 48A charger needs a 60A breaker.
What each Mercedes EV can actually use at home
| Model (US) | Home (AC) charge inlet | Max Level 2 rate | Amps at 240V | Charger that maxes it out | Breaker |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EQB | CCS1 (J1772 AC pins) | 9.6 kW | 40A | Any 40A J1772 unit | 50A |
| EQE Sedan / EQE SUV | CCS1 (J1772 AC pins) | 9.6 kW | 40A | Any 40A J1772 unit | 50A |
| EQS Sedan / EQS SUV | CCS1 (J1772 AC pins) | 9.6 kW | 40A | Any 40A J1772 unit | 50A |
| G 580 with EQ Technology | CCS1 (J1772 AC pins) | 9.6 kW | 40A | Any 40A J1772 unit | 50A |
| CLA with EQ Technology (2026) | Separate J1772 port (NACS port is DC only) | 11.0 kW | About 46A | 48A J1772 unit, hardwired | 60A |
| Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door (2027) | NACS (AC and DC) | Not published in the sources we checked | n/a | NACS charger, or J1772 charger plus adapter | Per charger |
Sources: Mercedes-Benz USA (EQS 9.6 kW, AMG GT 4-Door NACS inlet), Mercedes-Benz dealer EV FAQs (EQB and EQE 9.6 kW), Green Cars Compare (G 580 US 9.6 kW), Green Car Reports and InsideEVs (CLA 11 kW and port layout). Amps are kW divided by 240 volts. Some European Mercedes trims offer 11 kW or 22 kW onboard chargers, but those figures don’t apply to US cars.
What a bigger charger buys you, in hours
| Model | Full charge on a 40A charger (9.6 kW) | Full charge on a 48A charger | Time saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| EQS | Just over 11 h, 10-100% (Mercedes-Benz Canada) | Same | None |
| EQE SUV | About 11.5 h, 0-100% (Mercedes-Benz dealer FAQ) | Same | None |
| G 580 | About 12-13 h, 0-100% (116 kWh usable divided by 9.6 kW, plus losses) | Same | None |
| CLA (2026) | About 9.5 h, 0-100% (85 kWh divided by 9.6 kW, plus losses) | About 8 h (Green Car Reports) | About 1-1.5 h |
The G 580 and 40A CLA rows are our own estimates: usable battery capacity divided by charging power, plus a margin for charging losses. The point holds either way. On a 9.6 kW Mercedes, extra amps on the wall change nothing, and even on the CLA a 48A charger only saves about an hour overnight.
1. ChargePoint Home Flex — Best Overall for Any Mercedes
ChargePoint Home Flex (J1772)
- The one pick here that maxes out every current Mercedes EV: 40A on a NEMA 14-50 plug for an EQB, EQE, EQS or G 580, or 48A hardwired for the CLA's full 11 kW.
- Mercedes-Benz Canada features it on its own at-home charging page alongside the Mercedes-Benz Wallbox, so you're not going off-brand in any way that matters.
- Order the J1772 version, even for a 2026 CLA, whose home charging goes through its J1772 port.
- See our full ChargePoint Home Flex review for the plug-in vs. hardwired details.

2. Grizzl-E Classic 40A — Best Value for EQB, EQE, EQS and G 580
Grizzl-E Classic 40A
- 40A is exactly what a 9.6 kW Mercedes can draw, so this charges an EQS or G 580 as fast as any wall box on the market, for roughly $250 less than the ChargePoint.
- Plugs into a NEMA 14-50 outlet on a 50A breaker, the most common garage setup, with no hardwiring needed.
- No Wi-Fi or app. Mercedes owners can usually set off-peak charging times from the car or the Mercedes-Benz app instead.

3. Emporia Classic — Best Adjustable Pick for a CLA
Emporia Classic EV Charger (J1772)
- Hardwired at 48A it covers the CLA's 11 kW onboard charger, and it can be dialed down for an older EQ model or a smaller circuit.
- Its app logs energy and estimated cost per session, the same core data the Mercedes Wallbox shows in the Mercedes-Benz app, without the dealer markup.
- See our Emporia EV charger review for the plug-in vs. hardwired versions.
4. Mercedes-Benz Wallbox — Only If It’s Free
Mercedes-Benz Wallbox
- Mercedes-Benz USA lists home and public charging history, estimated costs, remote session control, protection against unauthorized use and over-the-air updates through the Mercedes-Benz app.
- Its 11.5 kW rating is more than any EQB, EQE, EQS or G 580 can accept, so on those cars the extra capacity goes unused.
- Mercedes-Benz USA let MY2025 EV buyers choose a free Wallbox or a $1,000 MB.CHARGE Public voucher. If your purchase includes an offer like that, the free Wallbox is a fine charger. Paying full dealer price for it is the hard sell.
5. Lectron Portable Level 2 (40A) — Best for Renters
Lectron Portable Level 2 EV Charger 40A
- Delivers the full 9.6 kW an EQ-model Mercedes can use from any NEMA 14-50 outlet, and it moves with you when the lease ends.
- Before buying, check what came with the car: Mercedes-Benz USA lists its own portable Power Charger with interchangeable 120V and 240V plugs and adjustable amperage.

The CLA wrinkle: a NACS port that isn’t for home charging
The 2026 CLA was billed as the first Mercedes in the US with a NACS port. InsideEVs reports that the US-spec car has two ports under one charge door: a NACS port for DC fast charging and a J1772 port for AC charging at home. Some shoppers will see “NACS” and order a NACS home charger, and that’s the wrong choice for this car. Buy a J1772 charger and plug it into the J1772 port. NACS only matters on the road, where it connects the CLA to Tesla Superchargers. Mercedes added a 400V converter to US customer cars from early 2026 so they can use 400V fast chargers as well as 800V units, according to the same report.
The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door is the reverse case. Mercedes-Benz USA says it uses a NACS inlet for both AC and DC charging, so at home you either buy a NACS charger such as the Tesla Wall Connector or keep a J1772 charger and use a J1772-to-NACS adapter. Our best NACS home charger guide covers the first route and our Tesla to J1772 adapter guide covers both adapter directions. For the background on the two plug standards, see NACS vs. J1772.
Installation: what Mercedes recommends
Mercedes-Benz Canada points owners to Qmerit for installation quotes, and Qmerit runs the Mercedes-Benz installation page that ranks first in Google for this search. Our Qmerit EV charger installation review explains how the quote process works. For budgeting, a 40A charger on a 50A circuit is the cheaper install: it’s the standard NEMA 14-50 setup, and on a 200A panel it often fits without a service upgrade. The 60A circuit a CLA needs for its full 11 kW uses heavier wire and leaves less spare panel capacity. Our EV charger installation cost guide has typical price ranges for both setups.
Public charging: Superchargers and the $185 adapter
Mercedes EVs in the US gained access to Tesla’s Supercharger network in February 2025. At the time, Mercedes said its authorized dealers would sell a CCS1-to-NACS adapter for $185, the only adapter it had tested and certified for its EVs. Mercedes-Benz USA now says its drivers can use more than 30,500 Tesla Superchargers, that MY2027 EQE and EQS models come with a NACS DC adapter, and that 2027 CLA and GLC models have a native NACS inlet for DC charging. If you own an older CCS1 Mercedes, our CCS to NACS adapter guide covers what’s certified and what to avoid.
The bottom line
For most Mercedes EV owners the right home charger is smaller and cheaper than the Mercedes-Benz Wallbox. The US EQB, EQE, EQS and G 580 all accept at most 9.6 kW on Level 2, which is 40 amps, so a Grizzl-E Classic 40A on a standard NEMA 14-50 outlet charges them as fast as anything you can buy. If you have a 2026 CLA, or want one charger that covers every Mercedes in the household, the ChargePoint Home Flex hardwired at 48A unlocks the CLA’s full 11 kW. Both connect through J1772, including on the CLA. Take the Mercedes Wallbox if it comes free with the car. For more general picks, see our best home EV charger roundup and the 40A vs. 48A breakdown.
