Why NACS exists, and why it isn’t finished replacing J1772
J1772 has been the AC charging standard in North America since the early 2010s — every non-Tesla home and public Level 2 charger built until very recently uses it, and DC fast charging on those same vehicles runs through a separate CCS1 port bolted on below it. NACS was Tesla’s own connector, opened up to the industry in 2023 and then formally standardized by SAE International as J3400 in September 2024, with a related J3400/2 hardware standard following in May 2025. That standardization is what let other automakers start building NACS ports without a one-off deal with Tesla for each one.
But “standardized” doesn’t mean “switched.” As of 2026, Rivian’s full R1T and R1S lineup ships with native NACS, the Cadillac Optiq and Optiq-V are GM’s first native-NACS production models, and the Acura RSX EV is Honda’s first native-NACS vehicle. Ford, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Mercedes, Volvo, and Polestar have all publicly committed to NACS, but many of their current 2026 model-year vehicles are still shipping with J1772/CCS1 — the transition is happening model by model, not brand-wide in a single year.
Which one do you actually need for a home charger?
Buy for the car you have, not the standard the industry is converging on. If every vehicle in the household is a pre-2025 non-Tesla EV, J1772 is still the right call — it’s what the car has, and it’s what most chargers, including budget picks like the Grizzl-E Classic, ship with by default. If the household has a Tesla or a confirmed native-NACS 2026+ model, go NACS.
